چکیده

The utilization of ornamental corals in Indonesia is quite high because the biggest coral exporting country world. level uptake wild so far has been big attention to government as contribution at reducing population, worsen status that already 35% poor condition. research determine waters Kendari carried out nine locations. It aimed determining existence nature along with habitat conditions through composition and diversity parameters. results showed potential use grouped by genera, namely many two genera ( Porites Fungia ) included common group, eight uncommon, 18 rare, 31 very rare. location live cover from 8.67% - 55.17% including good condition some locations found rubble sand. Based on calculations, can be utilized are category (genera Porites), while Acropora , Montipora Pavona Pectinia Euphyllia Favia Galaxea Seriatopora belong uncommon which means limited use. Rare groups their rare prohibited being used.

Eicosanoid Diversity of Stony Corals

Oxylipins are well-established lipid mediators in plants and animals. In mammals, arachidonic acid (AA)-derived eicosanoids control inflammation, fever, blood coagulation, pain perception and labor, and, accordingly, are used as drugs, while lipoxygenases (LOX), as well as cyclooxygenases (COX) serve as therapeutic targets for drug development. In soft corals, eicosanoids are synthesized on dem...

Bidirectional sex change in mushroom stony corals.

Sex change occurs when an individual changes from one functional sex to another. The direction of sex change occurs mainly from male to female (protandry) or vice versa (protogyny), but sometimes may be bidirectional (repetitive). Here, for the first time in stony corals, we report on a protandrous sex change exhibited by two mushroom corals, Fungia repanda and Ctenactis echinata, with the latt...

Biological control of aragonite formation in stony corals.

Little is known about how stony corals build their calcareous skeletons. There are two prevailing hypotheses: that it is a physicochemically dominated process and that it is a biologically mediated one. Using a combination of ultrahigh-resolution three-dimensional imaging and two-dimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we show that mineral deposition is biological...

Pathogens in Ornamental Waters: A Pilot Study.

In parks, ornamental waters of easy access and populated with animals are quite attractive to children and yet might hide threats to human health. The present work focuses on the microbiota of the ornamental waters of a Lisboa park, characterized during 2015. The results show a dynamic microbiota integrating human pathogens such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aeromonas spp. and Enterobacter spp., an...

Comparative Embryology of Eleven Species of Stony Corals (Scleractinia)

A comprehensive understanding of coral reproduction and development is needed because corals are threatened in many ways by human activity. Major threats include the loss of their photosynthetic symbionts (Symbiodinium) caused by rising temperatures (bleaching), reduced ability to calcify caused by ocean acidification, increased storm severity associated with global climate change and an increa...
